Preparing for our First Troop Meeting (2014)

After two great informational meetings and a packed-out parent meeting we are anxiously awaiting our inaugural Trail Life Troop KY-4:13 troop meeting!

We recognize that this is a brand new national program and even newer to Southeast Christian Church and our community. Consequently we still have work to do to be a fully-functioning troop. That’s where our parents come in. This post is intended to help prepare you for our first troop meeting and make sure you have all the information you need.

What can we expect at our first few troop meetings?

Our meetings will begin at 6:30 p.m. in FH 120. Trailmen and parents may begin arriving at 6:15 p.m. We will open our meetings with the flag ceremony, the Pledge of Allegiance, the Trailmen’s Oath, announcements, and prayer. From there the Trailmen will be dismissed to their grade-based units (i.e., Woodlands Trail, Navigators, Adventurers) which will meet in the adjoining rooms around FH 120.

Parents who still need to register their boys, purchase shirts, and pay troop dues will have the opportunity to do so at our first two troop meetings (September 15 and 22). You will also have the opportunity to indicate your interest in taking a leadership role within our troop. More on that below.

What should my son wear for troop meetings?

We are asking all Trailmen to wear a Trail Life shirt and khaki pants or shorts to all troop meetings. Shirts may be purchased through Trail Life’s online store or if you wish to save on shipping costs you may participate in the next bulk order that our troop will submit.

Leaders and registered adults are encouraged to wear a black shirt and khaki pants or shorts. You’ll find a few different options on the Trail Life Store.

Men’s Travel Polo | Men’s Dry Zone Polo | Men’s Dress Shirt
Ladies’ Tipped Polo | Ladies Dry Zone Polo

Any other apparel you wish to purchase (i.e., t-shirts, hats, outerwear, etc) at this point is optional.

We are anxiously awaiting the reveal of the Class A uniforms by the home office. We expect to hear more about these more formal uniforms in December. If you want to help provide seed money to the home office for these uniforms you have the opportunity to do so through the Trail Life USA store.

I’d love to help out! How can I get involved?

Awesome! We’re glad you are willing to help. We have several ways for parents to be involved.

Registered Adults
Many fathers and mothers wish to simply participate in the program with their sons. They want to be there along side their sons as often as they are able, but aren’t ready or able to commit to an official leadership role. For those parents we have the title of Registered Adult. Registered adults have signed Southeast’s statement of faith, cleared a background check, completed the online youth protection training, and have paid their $26 national dues. Only registered adults may participate in the Trail Life program with their sons. We want to ensure that every adult in the room has been cleared to work with children and youth.

Troop Leaders
We are looking for father’s who are willing to oversee the different units of the Trail Life program under the leadership of Bryan Carey our troopmaster. Cole Cortez will serve as the Ranger over the Woodlands Trail program, but we have not yet identified our Trail Master for the Navigators and our Adviser for the Adventurers. If you wish to step up into one of these roles please seek out Bryan at our next troop meeting.

Trail Guides
Trail Guides are registered adults who are willing to commit to making to as many meetings as possible and assist our Ranger, Trail Master and Adviser with leading the Trailmen. We need two adults for every ten-person patrol so we have plenty of opportunities here for parents to step up. NOTE: Mother’s can serve as Trail Guides for the Woodlands Trail unit (K-5th grade). If you’re willing to serve as a Trail Guide please please seek out Bryan at our next troop meeting.

Committee Roles
We still have a few open committee roles. Specifically we are looking for people to fill the following roles: Training Chair, Community Service Chair, Secretary, and Equipment Coordinator. Along with these roles we have a number of subcommittees that could use your help. For a list of these committees visit the Leadership section of the About Troop KY-4:13 page. If you would like to volunteer for one of these roles please seek out Ron Smith at our next troop meeting.

I still have a few questions!

No problem. We’re happy to field any questions you may have.

  • You might find an answer on our new FAQs page.
  • You may send us your questions using the form on our Contact page,
  • You can seek out a leader wearing a Trail Life lanyard and tag at our next troop meeting.

We look forward to beginning the Trail Life journey with you and your sons. We will see everyone Monday evening and in the meantime…Walk Worthy!
